Batteries on Essential Energy
How home batteries sit on the Essential Energy network in the Northern Rivers and Tweed — tariffs, export, backup, and what an assessment needs.
The grid is still in the room
A grid-connected battery in Byron Shire or Tweed does not take you off Essential Energy. It changes when you buy, when you export, and which circuits stay up if the feeder drops. Off-grid is a separate design with a different cost and a different risk conversation.
Export limits shape the battery
If export is limited, midday solar needs somewhere to go. A battery is one place. A daytime load is another. Oversized glass with nowhere to send energy is how systems disappoint people who only looked at panel count. A combined design should write the export assumption down — see solar + battery.
Tariffs change the maths
Flat, time-of-use, and any demand component change whether storage is doing tariff work or only backup work. Paste a recent bill into the enquiry. We would rather read your tariff than invent a statewide average. Any later dollar range should be labelled against that bill, or marked illustrative.
Backup is a circuit list
“The house stays on” is not a specification. Fridge, lights, communications, a medical device, and a garage door are a specification. Whole-home backup exists; it is larger and it should be asked for by name.
Rules move
Connection rules, product lists, and rebate settings change. This guide is educational framing, not a compliance certificate. The assessment should check the current Essential Energy and federal settings at the time of design — including STCs under the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme, which reduce upfront cost and should be calculated then, not copied from an old blog post.
